Rabies Outbreak Response – November/December 2013
On 21st November 2013, a request was made to ZDU to initiate rabies outbreak investigation in Lamu. A team was dispatched to Lamu archipelago and the exercise was carried out from 25th November to 2nd December, 2013.
Rabies Outbreak Response – October 2013
ZDU received a report on 10th October, 2013 on unprovoked dog bites at Kamulu sublocation, Njiru District. The bites occurred on 9th October. A team comprising a Medical Officer and Veterinary Officer was dispatched to the area on 11th October to ascertain the notification and conduct case search. 3 humans and 3 animals that had been bitten by the dog were identified.
All 3 humans received anti-tetanus and anti-rabies vaccines on the same day and follow-up anti-rabies vaccines were given as appropriate.
Dengue Fever outbreak Investigation, Mombasa County – Study period 21st April – 4th May 2013
In early March 2013, the Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation (MOPHS) was notified of cases of dengue fever in Mombasa, Kenya. The Division of Disease Surveillance and Response (DDSR) through its decentralized structures initiated sensitization of health Care Workers (HCW) and line listing of suspected Dengue Fever cases. Initiation reports from the county established that as at 10th April,2013 the total number of suspected cases linelisted were 85 and 34 laboratory confirmed cases and that new cases are still being seen at the various facilities within the county MOPHS dispatched a team comprising of The Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Programme (FELTP), DDSR, CDC and KEMRI to investigate Dengue Fever outbreak in Mombasa County.
Rabies Outbreak Response, Gem District, Siaya County – June 2013
ZDU together with collaborating partners Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, FAO, Kemri/CDC and Sharon Project-Galazo International were involved in a rabies outbreak response in Siaya County, Kenya between 17th to 22nd June, 2013. This came following information of a positive case that had been reported on 8th March, 2013 in Kisumu.
Animal vaccination was successful as the numbers reported were 5196 dogs, 834 cats, and 143 donkeys.
Anthrax Outbreak Investigation, Hamisi District, Vihiga County – June 2013
An anthrax notification was received on 12th June, 2013. The outbreak investigation team went out to carry out the investigation between 26th – 29th June, 2013. 28 of the initial 33 exposed persons were interviewed. 16 persons became symptomatic.
The involved partners were ZDU, Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Program (FELTP), CDC labs Kisumu, PGH Nyanza, Ministry of Health (MoH), and Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (MALF).
